The Mardi Trek is an easy to moderate trek that is doable by both beginners and experienced trekkers. The average daily walk consists of 5-7 hours per day. The ascend includes gradual and steep both for all days except the return journey. With a normal physical fitness one can complete the trek with ease. However, simple exercises before several days of the trek is recommended. You can engage in the exercises like walks, running, hikes, and stretches. It helps you prepare mentally and physically for the trekking journey in Mardi.
As Mardi Himal trek route includes everyday walking for five to seven hours through wooded paths, stone steps and narrow ridges (particularly after High Camp). Even though the altitude of 4,500 m at the Mardi Himal Base Camp is significant, the chances of getting sick from altitude are less since the hike is shorter and the ascent is more gradual. However, steep uphill parts, snow during cold months and exposed ridges where the weather can change fast are the challenges.
Advanced climbing skills are not necessary but excellent cardiovascular fitness, strongly built legs and basic altitude awareness are very important for a pleasant and safe trek.
The Mardi Himal Trek is a rare combination of short duration, stunning mountain views, and low crowd density. The trek is shortly accessible from Pokhara and soon immerses the hiker in wild rhododendron woods, alpine rocky areas, and narrow ridges. Along the way, you will enjoy dramatic close ups of Machhapuchhre, Annapurna, Hiunchuli, and Mardi Himal.
The changing landscapes from lush valleys to exposed high mountain areas give you a strong feeling of Himalayan immersion without the long commitment of the major circuits. The final stretch to Base Camp with its steep, raw and scenic ascent, offers a genuine alpine experience. It is this mix of access, solitude, and top-notch vistas that makes the Mardi Himal Trek so distinctive and remarkable.
The Mardi Himal trek provides valuable cultural insights into the Gurung and Magar communities of the Annapurna region. This trekking trail takes you through villages and grazing areas that provide an insight into the typical mountain life based on agriculture, cattle rearing and Buddhist culture.
Along the trekking path, monasteries, prayer flags, chortens and mani walls depict the spiritual richness of the area. Staying at the teahouses gives you a chance to meet the local people personally. You get to experience kindness, enjoy local food, and engage in daily conversations, raising your knowledge of the people’s customs, traditions and the way of life of the Himalayas.
The cultural experience on the Mardi Himal Trek is laid-back, real and very enriching. You can expect respectful and genuine interactions with the locals in the absence of heavy tourist traffic.
On the Mardi Himal Trek, accommodation is mostly offered in local teahouses and lodges that are situated along the route. These accommodations are basic but comfortable. They normally provide twin-sharing rooms with simple bedding like mattresses, pillows and blankets.
At higher altitudes, the facilities tend to get more basic, especially when you get beyond Low Camp and High Camp. Therefore, it is advisable to take a warm sleeping bag with you, at Explore Vision Nepal, we do provide warm sleeping bag to our client for the trip. Dining areas are usually warm with a central fire or a kerosene stove. This makes it a very comfortable place to unwind and mingle with other trekkers. Hot showers, charging, and Wi-Fi are among the limited services that may be available at the lower elevations, but usually at an extra cost.
The trek food is fresh, healthy, and plentiful. It is mainly prepared to meet the energy demands of the trekkers. The menu typically consists of local food like Dal bhat, noodles, soups, rice dishes, vegetable curries, eggs, pancakes, and pasta. You can also easily get hot drinks like tea, coffee and hot chocolate.
At the higher camps, the food is less varied because of the isolation. But it is still healthy and filling. Water consumption and warm, high-energy food are the primary means of maintaining your energy throughout the journey.
Mardi Himal Trekking is the most amazing during Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November), However, this trek can be done throughout the entire year.
The Spring brings moderate temperatures, blossoming rhododendron forests and clear weather for the view and trekking experience. The trail is highly colorful and full of life, making it a perfect time for nature lovers and photographers. Snow could still be present close to the High Camp and Base Camp at the beginning of the season. However, it would not make the trek difficult but rather add to the scenic beauty.
The Autumn weather is mild and perfect for the trekking adventure in Mardi Himal region, the air is crisp and the sky is clear all the time. The post-monsoon conditions yield sharp mountain views, pleasant daytime temperatures, and safer trail conditions.
Winter (December-February) gives you the opportunity to have the trails to yourself and enjoy beautiful winter scenes. But along with it come very cold temperatures and trails covered with snow. Likewise, Monsoon (June-August) rain leads to muddy and slippery paths and poor visibility although the forests are green and beautiful.
To sum up, for those who want the best possible combination of weather, visibility, and trail conditions, the spring and autumn seasons are ideal for the Mardi Himal Trek.

The general cost of the Mardi Himal Trek is between USD 600 and USD 1,000 per individual. The price is influenced by various factors like the duration of the trek, the season, the size of the group, and the level of service.
The prices are mostly at their highest during the peak periods of spring and autumn. This is because of the high demand whereas winter and monsoon treks are less expensive. The trek is labeled as a great value for money due to its short duration, easy logistics from Pokhara, and the spectacular mountain sights that it offers in a relatively short time.
Overall expenses are also affected by the number of guides and porters, the level of accommodations, the quality of the meals chosen, and the personal habits of spending on the trail.
High Camp is located at an altitude of about 3,580 meters and most of the time it is the last stop before reaching Mardi Himal Base Camp. The path to High Camp is arduous and it is necessary to take it slowly.
With each step, the hikers are rewarded with the views of the majestic Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and other beautiful Himalayan peaks around them. The night spent at High Camp is a great opportunity to feel the fresh mountain air and witness a sky full of stars in a remote, tranquil area. The next morning, you will see the sun rising over the Annapurna range, which is a magical experience.
An early morning hike from High Camp leads to Mardi Himal viewpoint at the elevation of 4,200 meters, the major highlight of the trek. It offers 360-degree panorama of high Himalayas. The sun slowly lights up the snowy slides of the Annapurna South and Hiunchuli, painting them gold and pink. From here, you can also see the long ridge of Machhapuchhre along the clouds creating a dramatic mountain scenes. The view is so intimate it almost feels timeless. You see the detail of every icy peaks.
Ascending further to the Mardi Himal Base Camp at about 4,500 meters you are welcomed with an even closer and more spectacular sight of the mountains covered with snow. At Base Camp, a pristine, quiet wilderness awaits you and you can indeed experience the Himalayas’ vastness and magnificence. It is an unforgettable moment where the exhilaration of high altitude trekking is mixed with the beauty and calmness of nature.
The journey to Mardi Himal is an excellent opportunity to witness the variety and richness of nature. The Mardi trekking trail passes through the vast biodiversity of the Annapurna Conservation Area. The trek features vibrant, lush forests teeming with different variety of birds and animals. You will pass through the blooming and colorful rhododendron and oak trees in spring. Further, you will pass through thick bamboo groves and flowering moorlands higher up.
On the way, there is a chance to spot a variety of wildlife such as the Himalayan monal, monkeys, musk deer and sometimes even leopards. Along with that, you can see butterflies and birds in large numbers. The variety of flora and fauna along with the change of scenery from tropical valleys to high alpine areas makes the trek a treat for the eyes. It is an exciting experience for the enthusiasts of nature and wildlife.
Mardi Himal Trekking requires the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). The ACAP costs USD 21 (NPR 3,000). It contributes to environmental conservation and local community development in the Annapurna region.
The permit is checked at various points along the route and is thus compulsory to carry. ACAP can either be acquired in Pokhara or through trekking agencies before the trek starts.
