Leaving Kathmandu city behind you enter one of the popular district of Nepal, Gorkha via Dhading, on the drive. The roads are both rugged and smooth. Enjoying the beautiful country side of Nepal you meet with the Budhi Gandhaki River.

Passing by the traditional villages and valleys of Gorkha you reach Machhakhola. It is the stop point of the day where you can witness North East view of Ganesh Himal.

After breakfast in the morning the trek starts on a rugged trails accompanied by the roaring Budhi Gandhaki River. The cascading waterfalls follow you along the trail as you reach the first village Khorlabesi before Tatopani (Hot water), a place where you can find natural hot spring water. Then you reach Dovan where you separate with the motorable roads and move on to traditional trekking trails.

Continuing on the zigzag trails along the River, you reach Yaru Bagar where you can find first cantilever bridge of Nepal. Moving forward, you reach today’s destination, Jagat, an entry point to Manaslu Conservation Area.

Today you start trekking on a protected area of Nepal, Manaslu Conservation Area. Passing the charming villages of Salleri and Sirdibas, you approach the trails of Tsum Valley and witness first Mountain View of Shringi Himal, from a small village Philim.

Then you pass by a long exhilarating suspension bridge and continue on the narrow trails enjoying the lushness of the Rhododendron and Pine forest. Then crossing few teashop the route separates between the Manaslu Circuit trek and Tsum Valley Trek. Entering a small colorful Buddhist style gate with a ‘Welcome to Tsum Valley’ written on it, you step into the ‘Hidden Valley’ of Manaslu the Tsum. There are welcoming paintings of different symbols and bodhisattvas on the gate. Continuing on the trail beautifully decorated with different wild flowers and Rhododendrons you reach Lokpa where you stop for the night.

Thrill of this day begins with another suspension bridge and a cantilever bridge before hiking uphill to the lush green forest. On the way to Chumling you come across only two teashops. The day is filled with uphill’s, however, counting the steps, listening the sounds of birds, woods and flowing deep Blue River takes away the sweat. You can witness charming green landscapes and a glimpse of mountains today. Enjoying the unspoiled art of Nature you reach your destination of the day that is Chumling.

Note: There is a landslide area just at the starting point of this day’s hike so, you need to be careful and do not stop for the photos. If you come across the herds of the mule avoid the edges and stop for them to pass by.

The morning begins with the beautiful backdrop mountain views of Ganesh Himal and Shringi Himal. A short suspension Bridge marks the start of this day’s hike. After you cross the bridge you follow the narrow paths leading while enjoying the gushing Siyar Khola and the Chir Pine trees. Continuing, the trails are adorned with Mani stone walls and eye catching landscape and picturesque villages. Until Rainjam the trail is easy and has a steady climb.

Then we stop at Rainjam before starting on uphill, a point where the trek separates with the Ganesh Himal base camp trek. You can enjoy majestic views of the Ganesh Himal Range.Β  Leaving Rainjam the trail is uphill with the lush Pine forest. Gradually the terrain starts to become barren with some stone stairs before reaching this days last stop Chhekampar.

Enjoy the beautiful morning and view around Chhekampar Village. After the breakfast the trek continues on a barren field with wide yak pastures. Snow-peaked Mountains start to open up as the journey continues. The trail is easy and does not include steep uphill and downhill.

En-route there are several Gompas and charming villages with Tibetan-styled houses made up of stones. You can witness local people in traditional dresses called Chuba. The trek elegantly presents cultural beauty of Nepal Himalayas and natural richness.

Leaving the Nunnery behind, today you move towards the last stop and the important highlight of the trek, Mu Gompa. You get to witness different snow-capped mountains from close. On the way, from Nile village the mountain view of Taya Himal is amazing.

After the villages the trails become rocky and barren. The area is surrounded with stunning hills that has frosted trees with majestic mountains peeking through it. After few hours you climb a small uphill leading to Mu Gompa which is the last stop of the Tsum Valley Trek. You can explore the Gompa (Monastery) and surrounding areas on the remaining time. Areas near Mu Gompa has a high chance of Lophophorus and Himalayan Musk Deer sighting. So pay attention as you might catch a memorable moment! Once you finished exploration at Mu Gompa, you will hike back to Nile.

The Day is easy today. On this day you start retracing footsteps back to Chhokang Paro. Enjoying the stunning landscapes and mountain breezes we pass by the villages of Cho Syong, Nile, Chule, Pangdung. On the way down, we will walk through Rachen Gompa and visit this liturgical site before heading to Chhekampar.

Today, you will trek towards another hidden gem village of Tsum Valley, Chumchet village. Chumchet village is one of the old and historical village in this region. From the alpine fields with pasture lands you slowly approach towards the forests and chirping birds. You can witness the landscapes are turning green and pushing through the lower beauty of Tsum. Finishing with long downhill coming from Chhekampar, cross the river and go on the other side. Then, narrow and less traveled trail through the forest leads you to charming village of Chumchet.

Another day of nearing the end of the Tsum Valley Trek .This day has a lots of downhills for you! Rhododendron trees are waiting for your farewell. Keeping the memories of Himalayas with self, you return to Philim as a Last day of Hiking. Passing by small Teahouses you come across a suspension bridge that you started the journey on. Leaving Tsum Valley now, it’s time to trek through the lower valley of Manaslu region.

This is the last day hike of the Tsum Valley Trek. The day is long as you hike all the way to Machhakhola today. It is includes most downhill and gentle flat through the village of Sirdibas, Jagat, Dovan, and Khorlabesi before reaching to Machhakhola.

Trip Information

Shagya Traditions since 1921

First thing you need to know about the Tsum Valley is that it is a vegetarian area. Just as you enter the welcome Gate of Tsum Valley there is a board mentioning Shagya Rules. Hunting, trapping animals, honey extractions, trading of domestic animals for meat, killing terrestrial animals, burning fire on grasslands and forest, transportation of animals for meat business are strictly prohibited. We strongly suggest trekkers to respect and follow the tradition that has been prevailing for more than 100 years in the Tsum Valley.

Electricity, Communication and Internet Facilities

Fortunately, in Tsum Valley, Nepal telecom (NTC) Sim card supports mobile network for communication. Each teahouses on the trail provides electricity, Wi-Fi connectivity, and charging facilities. If you are trekking to Tsum Valley make sure you buy a NTC sim card for communication. You can buy the SIM card on the arrival at airport or in Thamel area.

Difficulty of Tsum Valley Trek

Tsum Valley Trekking is easy to moderate trek. The trails are off-beaten, narrow, and rocky. Average walking hours per day is 6 to 7 hours a day. There are stone stairs and includes both uphill and downhills. For the first 3 days the trek includes most of the uphill. Average Walking is done on the narrow trails that needs extra care and consciousness. The trails of Tsum Valley is suitable for both beginner and expert trekkers.

Best Time for the Trek

Tsum Valley Trek is do-able in all seasons. However, the best time to do Tsum Valley Trek is mid-March to May and mid-September to October. During these period of time the weather is favourable for the stunning mountain views and hiking. The temperature is moderate and suitable for the trek.

Milarepa Cave

Milarepa cave is a sacred cultural site and has a great spiritual value for the Buddhist people. It is strongly believed that the great Buddhist Yogi Milarepa himself meditated in the cave consuming stinging nettles only. Inside the cave there are colorful thanka paintings and statues of Buddha with an old preserved footprint of the Yogi Milarepa.
