Private Vehicle | FlightThe Gokyo Lake Renjo La Pass Trek is a 13-day adventure through Sagarmatha National Park, offering a quieter alternative to the traditional Everest treks. You cross Renjo La Pass and journey along the breathtaking chain of Gokyo Lakes. Along the way, you get to experience local Sherpa hospitality, traditional villages, and historic monasteries of the Khumbu region.
The major highlight of the Gokyo Lake Renjo La Pass Trek is conquering Renjo La Pass, one of the highest trekking passes in the Everest region. Crossing the pass, you are rewarded with breathtaking views of the Gokyo Valley and Mount Everest itself. Equally unforgettable on this journey is an early-morning hike to Gokyo Ri (5,357m), which offers breathtaking sunrise views over four 8,000m mountains: Everest, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and Lhotse.
The 13-day Gokyo Lake Renjo La Pass Trek begins with an arrival in Kathmandu before a flight to Lukla. The trail then leads to Phakding, up to the Sherpa capital of the Everest/Khumbu region, Namche Bazaar. There you take an acclimatization break and hike to the Everest View Hotel. After that, leaving the major trail, you move toward the quieter western trail to Thame village and to Lungden.
Following, you come across a major challenge of the journey, Renjo La Pass. From there, you descend to the Gokyo village, where you stay for a Gokyo Ri hike and enjoy extravagant mountain views. After exploring the village, the trail heads south through Dole back to Namche Bazaar and Lukla for your return flight to Kathmandu.
Less Crowded Alternative: On typical popular routes, crowded trails, noisy teahouses, and frequent trekkers passing by can reduce solitude from the mountain path. Whereas the Renjo La Gokyo Lake Trek offers peaceful, less crowded trails, making it quiet where trekkers can experience Himalayan landscapes with the full authenticity of mountains.
Salt trade and Sherpa history: This journey moves through historical and old Sherpa villages like Thame and Namche Bazaar that were used as major routes linking Nepal and Tibet across high passes (like Nangpa La). Rather than simply hiking through the commercialized routes, it takes you along an ancient trade route.
Also, it passes through the birthplaces of world-famous mountaineers such as Apa Sherpa, who climbed Everest 21 times.
Renjo La Pass and Gokyo Ri in one journey: In just 13 days, you conquer a high Pass in the Everest region; additionally, you hike to the stunning viewpoint of Everest and Gokyo Ri. This gives trekkers two separate angles: an eastern side-valley view and a high 360-degree mountain view, including Mount Everest.
Route flexibility and extension: As Gokyo Renjo La Pass doesn’t follow the same route up and back, it offers fresh scenery every single day. Also, it offers the freedom to customize or extend the journey with routes like the Three Passes Trek, Everest Base Camp Trek, or the Everest Base Camp via Cho La Pass trek.
The Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek is one route among many trails in the Khumbu region. As this trek can be done within 13 days, longer and shorter versions of the trek are also available, including the same destination and without. At Explore Vision Nepal, we offer the 14-Day Everest Base Camp Trek, which we would like to recommend as the first alternative to the Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek, as this trip takes you to the base of the highest mountain in the world, including the best viewpoint at Kala Patthar.
Likewise, the Gokyo Chola Pass EBC Trek – 17 Days is another trip worth considering if you would like to add one more mountain pass and the iconic Everest Base Camp to your adventure journey. This trek continues toward Chola Pass after Gokyo village and reaches EBC and Kala Patthar. There is also an easier version of this trek available.
If you would simply like to explore the Gokyo Lakes without tackling any adventurous mountain pass, the 13-Day Gokyo Lake Trek is the suitable option for you. This trek takes you straight to Gokyo Lake and Gokyo Ri via Namche Bazaar, then back to Lukla the same way. Moreover, you can join one of the toughest adventures in the Everest region, the Everest Three Passes Trek – at EVN, we have designed this trek to run for 17 days.
The Renjo La Gokyo Lake Trek is categorized as a moderate to strenuous journey considering its high mountain pass and long walking hours. You trek from Lukla (2,860m) up to the highest altitude of 5,360m at Renjo La Pass.
Some of the specific difficulties of this trek are
Considering these points, this route is ideal for intermediate trekkers, peaceful hikers, and total nature enthusiasts. Trekkers who seek beyond the commercialized routes in the Everest region. Also, beginners can join this trek, but pre-trek training is strongly recommended, like daily stretching, running, walking, hikes, and cardiovascular exercises.
As this journey includes a Lukla flight and high-altitude exposure with high-pass crossing, choosing the best time to visit is crucial. It is highly effective for trail safety, accessibility, weather, and clear views. There are two peak seasons and two off-seasons for the Renjo Pass Gokyo Lakes Trek.
Autumn season (September to November) is the best: It is considered the best time of the year, as the trail offers clear skies, stable weather, dry trails, and an accessible high pass. You get to enjoy unfazed 360-degree panoramic views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu from the top of Renjo Pass and Gokyo Ri.
Spring (March to May) is peak season for nature to bloom: Temperatures are ideal for trekking as days begin to warm. You can see beautiful rhododendrons, magnolias, and wildflowers blooming along the way. The season creates a lively atmosphere in the Khumbu region with dry trails and beautiful mountain views, making it another best season for trekking.
Winter season (December to February) (off-season): The skies are clear during the day, but the region is extremely cold and has high chances of frequent snowfall. Renjo La Pass might close due to heavy snow blockage. The nighttime temperature drops below -15°C to -25°C. Also, most of the teahouses at higher elevations are closed.
Monsoon/summer season (June to August) (off-season): In this time of the year, there is heavy rainfall on the trail, bringing mud and heavy leeches along lower sections. There is a high chance of flight delays and cancellations this season. Also, views are unclear and blocked by heavy clouds and fog.
Local expertise and experienced guides: We are a Nepal-based agency with local expertise on the treks around the Khumbu region. Also, our licensed guides are experienced in high-altitude trekking and route safety across Renjo La Pass and Gokyo Ri. They assist you with acclimatization, regional knowledge, and authentic stories about local Sherpa people, ensuring your journey is safe and well-paced.
A dedicated, young, and customer-focused team: From answering your first inquiry to helping you on your arrival, your trekking journey, and departure, we prioritize friendly, approachable service for a smooth and enjoyable experience.
Flexible bookings and custom plans: Every trekker has different fitness levels and preferences. Whether you want to add extra acclimatization days or customize your itinerary and trip extensions to connect Everest routes. We plan with you together to plan that fits your needs.
Complete Logistics: This includes securing required permits (Sagarmatha National Park and local municipality permits), managing flight arrangements to and from Lukla
Essential Gear & Thoughtful Extras: To help you pack lighter and stay comfortable during freezing high-altitude nights, we include several helpful complimentary items for your trip:
Memories to Take Home: An Explore Vision Nepal t-shirt and an official Trip Completion Certificate upon finishing your trek.
Welcome to the country of the Himalayas! As you land at the airport and get off, you can feel a sensation of thrill, excitement, and energy. Our representative waits for your arrival with a warm heart and a postcard in hand. Then, you are transferred to your hotel.
Later, we will set up a trip meeting with you, where we will introduce you to your trekking guide and explain the trip itinerary. You can ask any questions you may have about the trip. At the same time, we will provide you with the trekking duffel bag, down jacket, and sleeping bag for the trip.
If time permits, you can walk around and explore the surroundings near the hotel, rest, and make final preparations for the Gokyo Lake–Renjo La Pass Trek, which starts tomorrow.

On the Renjo La Gokyo trail, you stay at well-developed local teahouses; lodges are available in every village. As you gain altitude, you might feel the facilities have become limited.
The rooms are typically twin sharing with beds, mattresses, pillows, and blankets. There is no room heating on this route, except Namche and Lukla, if you upgraded your accommodation. Toilets are mostly shared after you above Namche Bazaar, and hot showers cost extra.
Lukla: There are standard lodge/guesthouses in the village with attached bathroom. It is a busy gateway town near Tenzing-Hillary Airport, with better facilities than those in villages at higher altitudes.
Phakding: The teahouses are basic to standard. It is the first night on the Renjo La Gokyo trail. These teahouses are simple but reliable.
Namche Bazaar: This village is also known as the Sherpa capital. There are many standard hotel-style lodges, bakeries, and cafes. Accommodation with attached bathroom with showers are available.
Thame Village: Here you can find basic standard teahouses. It is a peaceful village with fewer lodges, simple rooms, and good cultural ambiance.
Lungden: It is a small village and a final stop before you cross Renjo La Pass on this journey. There are basic high-altitude teahouses with limited electricity.
Gokyo Village: It is one of the beautiful villages with accommodations serving stunning lakeside views. The teahouses here are basic standard with hot showers, Wi-Fi, and charging at extra prices. Still, do not expect it to be reliable all the time.
Dole: There are basic standard teahouses in this quiet village on your return journey. The facilities are simple but comfortable.
With our carefully designed itinerary, you gain altitude gradually as we are concern about your health and safety while trekking in high altitude in Nepal. Crossing 3000m from Phakding, you slowly begin to get exposed to high altitude. Then, in Namche Bazaar, you take a hike up to 3,880m at Hotel Everest View to follow a climb high, sleep low formula to prepare your body for altitudes above 3700m.
Then you stay at higher altitudes above 4300m and reach high points like 5,357m and 5,357m. These are the extreme durations of time you spend at high altitude. Past that, you slowly recover from the altitude during the return journey.
Since much of the trail is at high elevation, trekkers are exposed to high-altitude risks. So, you must be aware of early symptoms like headache, loss of appetite, fatigue, and trouble sleeping. If you have any of these, you must consult your trekking guide and get help immediately.
To trek Renjo La Pass and Gokyo Lakes in the Everest region, trekkers are required to obtain two mandatory permits: the Sagarmatha National Park Permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit. A TIMS card is not required for this route now.
Sagarmatha National Park Permit: It grants access to the protected UNESCO World Heritage site and supports local conservation efforts. This permit is then checked at the mid-stop Monjo village.
Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit: This is a local government entry fee that funds infrastructure, healthcare, and trail betterment in the Everest region.
At Explore Vision Nepal, we take care of all permit logistics and paperwork within the package cost so you can focus on experiencing the journey hassle-free. We pre-arrange the national park permits through the Tourism Board office in Kathmandu.
While basic meals and accommodation on trekking days are included in this guided package itinerary, you might need extra cash for your personal expenses. Here is a simple breakdown of how much extra cash to carry on your Gokyo Lake Renjo La Pass Trek.
As per ATMs on the trail, Lukla and Namche Bazaar have ATM services. However, these machines frequently run out. Passing the Namche village, there are no ATMs on this Renjo La Gokyo route. Even the card payment system is non-existent, so it is always better to withdraw cash while in Kathmandu.
