Private VehicleShort Langtang Valley Trek is one of the Langtang journeys across the Himalayas that can be completed within 8 days. In just two days of hiking, you reach stunning alpine scenery. Ideal for travelers with limited time, this trek offers a refreshing escape and a quick break in the mountains.
The journey starts from the bustling city of Kathmandu. Then, taking a drive, you reach the gateway of the Langtang short trek, Syabrubesi. Next, it continues along the short trail, stopping to rest at Bamboo and Thangsyap. Lastly, continues to the last stop of the trek, Kyanjin Gompa.
The specialty of the trek: Within the two days of walking from Syabrubesi to Bamboo to Thangsyap, you get to see the terrain change instantly. “It transitions from a subtropical region into an alpine zone.”
Kyanjin Gompa, being the last stop of the trek, is where you take a rewarding side hike to Tsergo Ri. This is one of the best viewpoints of Langtang Valley, from where you get 360-degree panoramic mountain views from every angle.
At the end, after a successful hike to Tsergo Ri, you enjoy majestic mountain views. You then return along the same route, completing the 8-day Short Langtang Valley Trek journey. With that said, in eight days, you go from the streets of Kathmandu to stand at 5,000 meters, with the entire Langtang Range in view!
The short Langtang Valley trek is done within the first Himalayan National Park of Nepal: Langtang National Park, located in the Rasuwa District. It is in the north-central part of Nepal, about 80km north of Kathmandu, and is reachable with a 7 to 8-hour drive.
This national park is also known as one of the nearest parks with the prominent mountains within its zone. Although the National Park is close to the capital city, Kathmandu, it is still pristine and less crowded for Langtang treks.
One thing you cannot ignore while trekking through the trails of Langtang is its historical connection to the 2015 earthquake. The earthquake officially confirmed over 300 deaths, including foreign nationals, destroying the old Langtang village.
This means you are trekking the trails that are not only built on historical achievements but also on the courage, resilience, and cultural respect of the Langtangpa (Langtang people).
‘The trekking trail exists because the local people of Langtang didn’t want it to vanish with the old Langtang Village.’
Welcome to the country of the Himalayas! As you land at the airport and get off, our representative warmly welcomes you and assists with your arrival. Then, accompany you to your hotel in a private vehicle. During this time, we will let you know about the trip meeting time and location.
Once the check-in procedure is complete, feel free to rest, prepare for the trip, or enjoy a walk around the area if the time permits!

On this day, you take a drive to Syabrubesi following the Trisuli River. The scenic drive passes through different landscape transitions. From the Shivapuri hill to the flat land by terrace farmland, the river, to the cluster of small Tamang and Brahmin traditional villages. Gradually passing through those villages, you enter the Langtang National Park buffer zone, taking you to the starting point of the trek, Syabrubesi.
After reaching Syabrubesi, you take a short hike to a place named Bamboo. The trail to it is easy, with a short uphill and a flat forest trail. This place is beautifully located by the riverside and surrounded by bamboo groves.

As the landscape widens through the alpine meadows and Yak pastures, the Langtang range slowly start to get visible. The trail passes through the rebuilt Langtang village, a place of quiet significance following the 2015 earthquake that destroyed almost the entire settlement and claimed over 300 lives (total 306 recorded). Trekkers often pause here in reflection.
From Langtang village, the route continues across open meadows to Kyanjin Gompa. Upon arrival, we strongly recommend visiting the yak cheese factory.

This is the day when you reach the highest point of the trek, the day that most trekkers remember in the Langtang Short Trek. The hike starts before the first sunray touches the peaks of Langtang Lirung.
In the morning, you start your hike following the route north from the Kyanjin Gompa. The beginning of the Tsergo Ri hike has a gradual uphill before it gets steep. While walking, you can see the peak of Langtang Lirung getting golden as the first rays of the sun touch it.
On the way, enjoying the sunrises with the Langtang, you come across a river crossing and an uphill with a curvy trail. The trails are covered in different wildflowers. With this, the trails become more enjoyable, with flowers beside the feet and mountains ahead of the scene.
As you near the peak of Tsergo Ri, the Langtang Glacier slowly becomes visible, and your breath becomes slower as you have already crossed 4000m altitude. Completing the summit of Tsergo Ri, you get rewarded with the stunning mountain views at every angle. From the point you see Langtang Lirung, Langtang II, Yala Peak, Dorje Lakpa, Shishapangma (Tibet), and the entire Langtang Range spread in every direction.
If you are tired and do not want a long hike, here is an optional hike for the day: the Kyanjin Ri Hike.
It is a half-day hike that offers spectacular views of the Kyanjin Gompa below and the Langtang Lirung ahead of you. It is comparatively shorter and less challenging than the Tsergo Ri hike.
Note: Regardless of which summit you choose to make, you get to enjoy a stunning 360-degree mountain panorama. The only difference is that the views of Tsergo Ri extend to Mount Shisapangma of Tibet. After the hike, you return to Kyanjin Gompa and stay there for a night before descending.

On this trek, you get more than an adventure experience. As the Langtang region has a specific cultural existence that is the Tamang culture, the trails offer a glimpse of their culture mixed with the Tibetan traditions. While trekking, you get to pass through their homes and cultural landmarks that enhance the journey.
Some of the Local Villages in Langtang with Tamang settlement you pass through on this journey are:
It is one of the large village settlements and the first stop of the Short Langtang Valley Trek. This village is also known as the gateway to the Langtang treks. It is the village you take a drive to before starting your trek on the trail.
This is a small settlement placed beautifully on the Langtang Riverside. The trail to it has a stunning bamboo forest. As you pass it, the first stop you reach is Bamboo, serving mostly as a lunch station or a rest stop. On this trek, you stop here as a rest stop.
This is a popular stop on the Langtang Trekking trail. Most of the trekkers doing the Classic Langtang Valley Trek stay here overnight before continuing the ascent. However, with this Short Langtang Valley Trek itinerary, we pass by Lama Hotel and stay here only when we return.
Thangsyap is larger than the Lama hotel and is one of our stops in the short Langtang Trek. It is on a small hilltop from where the flat trail to Kyanjin Gompa starts. From this village, you get stunning views of the alpine landscape, surrounded by the rocky hills on the side. It is one of the places that has a high chance of spotting the Himalayan Tahr, and the Himalayan Monal, the national bird of Nepal (Danfe).
This is a newly built Langtang village after the 2015 earthquake disaster. It is about 10 to 15 min ahead of the old village. From 2015 to the present, there have been many teahouses rebuilt.
It is one of the villages that showcases the Buddhist culture on this journey. With the Mani wall before entering, the gompa by the side, and the teahouses in Tibetan style.
Kyanjin Gompa is the largest and last settlement you come across on this Short Langtang trek. This is the first village to offer a full view of Kanja la range, Langtang Lirung, Tsergo Ri peak, and the Gangchenpo.
