Swayambhunath: The Monkey Temple
The name Swayambhunath means ‘self-formed stupa’, believed by the Buddhist pilgrims mentioned in the Swayambhu Purana. It is also known as the monkey temple, as the area is filled with hundreds of monkeys. Staying at the hilltop, the area offers stunning views of the whole of Kathmandu City.
Kathmandu Durbar Square: Storing Timeless History
It is a place that shows the history of the Malla Dynasty, the period of King Pratap Malla. It is also known as the Hanuman Dhoka Palace, as the entrance gate of the palace is protected by the deity, Lord Hanuman. Kasthamandap is another attraction of the area, as it is built from a single tree. There is a popular temple, the Taleju Bhawani temple, which was once the royal god’s shrine.
Bouddhanath Stupa: The Largest Stupa
It is one of the largest spherical stupas in the world, which is about 36m high. The stupa is an important pilgrimage site for the Buddhist people. Built in the 5th century AD, it has carried traditions and history from the Licchavi period.
Pashupatinath Temple: Sacred Hindu Temple
One of the most sacred Hindu temples, the Pashupatinath Temple, is dedicated to lord Shiva. It was built in the 5th century and was renovated during the 17th century. It is popular for the cremation sites near the Bagmati River, where the rituals are performed for 24 hours. Day 01: Visit Swayambhunath, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Pashupatinath, and Bouddhanath Stupa, Duration: 5-6 Hours
The day starts with a drive from your hotel to Swayambhunath, the Monkey Temple. You climb along the 365 uphill stairs until a large bajra (Vajra) welcomes you to the sacred place. Following the Buddhist tradition, your visit journey begins from the clockwise direction, enjoying the panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley.
After that, you drive back to the middle of the city, Kathmandu Durbar Square. There, you visit significant sites like the Sacred Kumari Ghar, Hanuman Dhoka Palace Museum, and Kasthamandap. The area is filled with beautifully carved wooden houses, temples like Jagannath, Taleju, Kal Bhairav, and Swet Bhairav.
Then, you drive to the next destination, one of the most sacred Hindu temples in the world, Pashupatinath Temple. Inside the territory, there are stunning pagoda-style Temples, statues, and paintings. Visiting around you can witness the cremation rituals at the Aryaghat along the Bagmati River. It gives deep insights into the after-death rituals of the Nepali people.
At the end, you visit one of the important and sacred Buddhist sites, the Bouddhanath Stupa. Entering the gate, you see the noticeable eyes of the Buddha staring right at you from above the large white dome. Then again, following the tradition, the clockwise round starts with your hands spinning the prayer wheels.
There are several Tibetan monasteries with prayer halls that you can visit. You can also shop for the souvenirs dedicated to the Buddhist equipment, Thanga paintings, and handicrafts. Learn about the long-written stories of the Stupa and try special Tibetan foods. Concluding your journey with Buddha makes the day end in peace and profound reflection.
